Freelancing - The Key to a Balanced and Rewarding Career

Many women who choose to return to work, maintain their skills or are seeking flexibility in their careers find freelancing is a viable option. However, like any career choice, there are pros and cons to this option.

A few of the benefits are outlined below:

Flexibility
One of the biggest appeals of freelance work is that it allows for flexibility. Freelancers can choose the hours they work, and in some cases may work at night when it’s quiet and more convenient to them. For those that need to balance family and other commitments with their freelance work, this can be a huge benefit, as it allows for more flexibility.

Ability to Turn Passion into Pay
Many people who pursue freelancing have found that they can turn their hobbies or interests into a successful business model. For example, some freelancers may work on writing, baking or crafting projects during the evenings to earn an extra income. Some have even been able to turn their hobbies into full-time businesses. If you’re passionate about something and can make it into a business, it can be an incredibly rewarding and fulfilling experience.

Increased Rates
As you gain more experience, you can often command higher rates as a freelancer. This reflects your improved skills and value to clients, as well as the fact that you aren’t reliant on a single employer for your work. However, it is important to find a balance between the amount of money you charge and how many clients you take on, as charging too high a rate can quickly shrink your client pool.

Control of Finances
As a freelancer, you’re essentially your own boss, so you need to get to grips with financial management and general admin – areas that aren’t always easy to grasp for someone who is new to this type of work. It’s crucial to write out a basic business plan that details how much you think you can earn and what costs you’ll incur. This will help you prioritize tasks on a day-to-day basis, as well as set goals for the short, medium and long term.

Challenges
One of the main challenges of working freelance is that you need to be self- motivated and be able to source your own clients. This means that you need to be comfortable networking and reaching out to potential customers, whether it’s in person or online. It’s also important to be able to handle difficult situations, such as negotiating a higher rate or breaking up with a client, tactfully and professionally.

Freelancing is a great way to build up your professional portfolio, as you’ll have a range of projects that can be added to your resume. It’s also a great way to try out a different industry and to develop new skills. However, if you’re not prepared for the responsibilities that come with being your own boss, this isn’t necessarily the right career path for you. Do your research and decide if it’s the right fit for you.
